xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx x VETERANS OF WAR AND MEMORIAL FOR TARA SINGH HAYER

D. Hayer: Last Friday, November 11, people across this great nation and around the world paid homage to the brave men and women who fought, who were wounded and who died in wars, past and present, to preserve the democracy that we hold so precious.

If it were not for their sacrifices, we would not be here in this chamber today. We would not have the society that we have today — a society that is controlled by the people, for the people. We have the freedom to move, freedom to vote, freedom to choose and freedom to speak because of those young men and women.

Our courageous soldiers, sailors, aviators, peacekeepers and others fought and died around the world for us, such as World War I, World War II, Korea, Bosnia, Afghanistan and other parts of the world.

Personally, I want to recognize sailors, aviators and peacekeepers and others who fought and died in and around the world for us, such as World War I, World War II, Korea, Bosnia, Afghanistan and other parts of the world. Personally, I want to recognize two veterans, my father-in-law, Jose Martinez, who served in France during the Second World War, and my father, Tara Singh Hayer, who was a captain in the Indian army.

My father did not lose his life in combat. It was taken right here in Surrey, British Columbia, in an act of terrorism to silence him in his effort to bring justice to the victims of Air India bombing. My father died in his garage in Surrey on November 18, 1998.

To recognize our loss and his devotion to free speech, to our democracy and to preserve our Canadian way of life, we will be holding the 13th memorial for his death on Sunday, November 20 at…Brookside in Surrey. I invite all members in the House to join me with my family in commemorating his passing and his valiant effort to preserve democracy and the freedom of speech and thought, through his newspaper, against the plague of terrorism.
