British Columbia has a number of forieign offices, called
Consulates. These offices are part of the foriegn overseas
service provided by many
countries. They exist as part of the embassies located
in Ottawa, providing regional representation, encourage
trade between BC and the
country they represent and aid with documents such as
visas to vistors to the country.
Generally speaking, Consular Officers perform the following
functions:
•Represent their country and promote their country's
trade within the Province
•Assist and protect nationals of the country they represent;
•Explain their country's policies and achievements in
fields such as culture and tourist attractions;
•Protect their country's shipping interests, legalize
ship's papers, assist their country's seamen in distress
and adjudicate on certain shipping matters; and
•Administer oaths, legalize foreign documents and issue
passports, visas and certificates.
The most familar to many citizens is the need to obtain
a visa to travel to the country of choice (for example,
someone wishing to travel to Australia, or India) ,
or to obtain documents from their country of origin.
Many of the counsular offices are located in downtown
Vancouver. Provided here is a list of foriegn representatives
in British Columbia with contact information, and also
consular websites provided by national governments.
